These four documentary shorts beautifully examine the cultural experiences of women celebrating their lives and identities as lesbians.
Where the Girls Are
Tricia Cooke and Jennifer Arnold, US, 2004
Where the Girls Are is a lighthearted look at the Dinah Shore Golf Weekend, an annual event which draws thousands of partying lesbians to conservative Palm Springs. The film examines the lives of the women who make the annual pilgrimage to connect with thousands of other lesbians, and offers the testimony of older and more conservative women who, living in and feeling territorial about Palm Springs, decry the lesbian invasion. Video, 29 min.
Michigan Fever!
Lisa Vogel, US, 2004
A provocative visual collage of the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, Michigan Fever! is a fast-paced short art documentary offering a visceral experience of lesbian culture in the open woods of Michigan. Video, 11 min.
Rough Cut
Logan Kibens, US, 2003
Rough Cut tells the story of a failed relationship while asking questions about the nature of identity and the importance of other people in our lives. Using television parody, Rough Cut investigates the ways media has come to define our emotional landscape and how it fails to replace personal connections. Video, 20 min.
Confession: A Film About Ariel Schrag
Sharon Barnes, US, 2004
Confession: A Film About Ariel Schrag explores 23-year-old Ariel Schrag’s world in which she negotiates fame, obsesses about disease, and discusses the way she sees the world as a dyke comic book artist. Schrag’s autobiographical work is of vital importance because it chronicles the underground world of teen dyke culture in all of its raw, sexual, and complicated glory -- in a way that is rarely recognized or represented in mainstream art, literature, or media. Video, 23 min.
