Richard Day, US, 2004
Reeling is thrilled to close this year’s festival with Richard Day’s delightful (but thought-provoking) romp through 1950s Hollywood. Guy Stone is a Silver Screen heartthrob whose homosexual escapades are making the studio awfully nervous. Enter his agent, who arranges his marriage to a naïve secretary, Sally, to ensure that the best-kept secret in Tinseltown is kept that way. Of course, all the studio insiders already know the truth – that is, everyone except Sally, who accepts the challenge of domesticating Guy with heartbreaking oblivion. Matt Letscher (Good Morning, Miami), as Guy, embodies the spirit of the clueless, closeted icon perfectly; and Veronica Cartwright ups the ante as his (possibly lesbian?) agent, an indomitable woman living a few decades ahead of her time. Mix in a hilarious supporting cast of characters, the career-threatening Red Scare, a few musical numbers, and a heartfelt romance with a socialist writer, and you have a Technicolor dream of a film that will not only make you laugh, but might even make you cry. 35mm, 96 min.
After the Straight-Jacket screening, audience members can kick up their heels at Hydrate Nightclub for the Closing Night Party. The Reeling raffle drawing, sponsored by ORBITZ, will take place with the assistance of Miss Foozie. The party starts at 11:00 pm. DJ Greg Drescher spins at midnight. Admission is $25 for the screening and after-party, and attendees will enjoy complimentary drinks and hors d'oeuvres.
