Profile on DJ Plez
A self-proclaimed "house-head", DJ Plez has a diverse range of dance music "likes" to accompany his true love of Chicago house music, which he first started spinning in the mid-1980s and still to this day loves so much to play. The incredibly wide variety of music DJ Plez possesses helps explain the unique style he has forged: one that melds various forms of dance music - Chicago house, progressive, tribal, underground, deep house, circuit, and club - into a cohesive presentation that is rhythmically exciting, sexy, and energetic. DJ Plez uses fresh approaches for each of his live sets, skillfully producing intricate mixes on the fly and creating a sense of dance floor drama with his in-booth programming. Most importantly to DJ Plez, he makes sure his live sets, as well as his CDs, have one abiding element: GROOVE!
As would be expected from his wide ranging style, the DJs that have most influenced DJ Plez represent the vast global dance music scene and include: Victor Calderone, Derrick Carter, John Digweed, Danny Howells, Frankie Knuckles, Susan Morabito, David Morales, Ralphi Rosario, Deep Dish, Danny Tenaglia, and Junior Vasquez. However, the most significant influence on DJ Plez's abilities in the DJ booth is the experiences he has when he's out dancing at parties and in clubs. It's from the dance floor that he derives the euphoria he feels when he "jacks his body" to the beat of the music. It's also the best place to stay in touch with the party-people in order to truly find out and understand what makes a dance floor tick. Staying connected to the dance floor leads to DJ Plez being that much more successful in the DJ booth.
In recent years, DJ Plez has been keeping folks happy not just in Chicago but all over the world. Serving as a self-proclaimed ambassador of house music and helping to perpetuate and grow this Chicago-born art form, DJ Plez has racked up some serious frequent flier miles with bookings in Zurich, Switzerland, Montreal, and Miami. A current resident DJ in Milwaukee at PUMP!, he has established himself throughout the Midwest with guest appearances at the biggest dance clubs in Chicago (Circuit, Sound-Bar, and Crobar) and with former residencies at Cell Block, Club Reunion, and Ezuli.
DJ Plez also specializes in special events, including his July 2005 appearance at the Farm Party in Fennville, Michigan (one of the largest outdoor gatherings in the Midwest). His unique and soulful musical stewardship of the after-hours Oasis Lounge at the 2004 and 2005 Fireball Festivals has brought a fresh and invigorating style to circuit events that has resulted in rave reviews by participants and organizers alike. DJ Plez has spun at events for Steppenwolf Theatre and the Museum of Contemporary Art and he is the resident DJ for all KAFKA wine co. events. .
Not just content with spinning the records in the DJ booth, DJ Plez has been the Music Editor of ChicagoPride.com since February 2004, penning his Groove Line and the web site's Music Review columns. As well, he writes interview and profile articles of DJs and artists and does some general entertainment reporting. In addition to ChicagoPride.com, DJ Plez also writes for Boi Magazine as their lead music columnist. These musical journalistic endeavors only serve to make DJ Plez that much stronger as a DJ once he gets behind the decks and puts his earphones on.
