Reeling: C.R.A.Z.Y.

A huge crossover hit in its home country, C.R.A.Z.Y. cleaned up at the Genies (Canada’s Academy Awards equivalent), winning best picture and director and ten other awards. This boundlessly energetic period piece begins in 1960 and spans 30 years in the life of a large, tight-knit Catholic family living in suburban Montreal. Zac is born into this family on Christmas day, which his religious mother takes as a sign that he is special. And special he is. Zac is one of five brothers and the favorite of his father, a chain-smoking fan of Patsy Cline. But as signs begin to emerge that Zac is different from his rough and tumble brothers, his father begins to withdraw from him. Sexually confused, Zac struggles to find his place in the world and in his father’s heart. This hilarious, exhilarating, and at times painful coming of age story is told against a psychedelic canvas of pop culture and eighties punk, with songs from David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones evoking an atmosphere of both nostalgia and rebellion. 35mm, 127 min.

REELING: Filthy Gorgeous, The Trannyshack

Punk Rock. Drag. Performance Art. Where else could you be but at Trannyshack, San Francisco’s showcase for the insanely creative, combating tired old ideas of drag with outrageous acts of art? Started by drag queen Helinka and now celebrating its tenth year, it began as a way to honor friends lost to AIDS. Traditional interviews with drag stars like Justin Bond from Kiki & Herb and Ana Matronic from the Scissor Sisters, are woven with shots of Bauhaus, David Bowie, and Papa Roach performances, among many others, giving us a glimpse of this drag utopia. Video, 87 min.

REELING: Creatures From The Pink Lagoon

Night of the Living Dead meets The Boys in the Band in this outrageously ridiculous horror film set in a small town in 1967. Plucky young sissy Phillip is about to celebrate his birthday at the beach cottage owned by his best friend Stan. All of Phillip's friends are gathered for the festivities, including Stan's hunky-but-impulsive boyfriend Billy, Billy's shy, nerdy cousin Joseph, and Randall, the chain-smoking, bitter queen of the bunch. Meanwhile, a horde of libidinous gay men--turned into ravenous flesh-eating zombies by toxic mosquitoes at a cruisy highway rest stop--are making their way towards our oblivious celebrants, eating every man in their path. With body parts washing up on shore and party guests disappearing, our heroes must find a way to stop the zombie onslaught before it’s too late! No one is safe in this crazy mix of B-horror movies, high melodrama, and gay camp. Video, 71 min.

Reeling: Puccini For Beginners

As implied by the title, this is the story of a love triangle of operatic proportions. Director Maria Maggenti (The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love) brings us a bisexual romantic triangle between a lesbian writer, a straight male professor and his ex girlfriend, an artist. Within the grand tradition of New York love stories, this film features Allegra, a hyper-therapied and neurotic female version of Woody Allen, who asks herself, “how can a lesbian be in love with a man?” Told in three acts, this story of heartbreak and fear of commitment concludes in a finale of humorous revelations and comedic disclosures. 35mm, 82 min.

Reeling: Looking for Cheyenne

Sonia and Cheyenne are proof that opposites attract. Sonia is a high school teacher with job security and clear goals. Cheyenne is an unemployed, idealistic nonconformist who doesn’t see what’s so great about playing by the rules. Cheyenne decides to chuck it all and leave Sonia and her home in Paris to live off the fat of the land. While struggling to build their lives without one another, they ache for each other continuously. Will Sonia sacrifice her stability for love? Will Cheyenne give up her ideals? Or will their love be lost forever? The “dialogue is sharp, heartache is palpable and the critique of how capitalist society just wants to chew you up and spit you out is deftly woven into a new-fangled, old-fashioned love story.” (Variety) 35mm, 86 min.

Reeling: Colma, The Musical

The reviews are in: Colma is the ultimate proof that passion and talent matter more to a film than loads of money! This indie film will rekindle your faith in cinema and the musical genre. In the small suburban nowheresville town of Colma (where the dead outnumber the living 1,000 to 1), three bored friends fresh out of high school tackle the age-old question: “Now what?” Boasting 13 toe-tapping rock musical numbers by H.P. Mendoza, fans on the Internet Movie Database are already declaring this “the best movie ever!” And the critics agree: “Genius!” (gay.com) “Irresistible coming of age charmer.” (Variety) “A giddy, unexpected pleasure: There is more wit, energy and imagination in any one frame … than in an entire decade’s worth of lame Hollywood attempts to revivify the genre.” (LA Weekly) Video, 119 min.
