REELING: Eleven Men Out

Queer football star comes out! Ottar, a sexy Icelandic pro-footballer grabs headlines by coming out in a magazine interview. Horrified, his team suspends him immediately. Undeterred, Ottar joins an amateur team that already has a few queer players. Attracted by the football star's notoriety, more gay soccer players join up, while the straight boys on the team hilariously run in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, Ottar starts a relationship with a hot younger player and has his hands full dealing with his sullen teenage son and his alcoholic ex-wife, a former Miss Iceland. The inevitable showdown comes when his new team plays his old team on the day of the gay pride festival, a game that’s the hottest ticket in town! 35mm, 85 min.

Reeling: The Book of Daniel

Find out what some conservative Christian groups didn’t want us to see when they pressured NBC to pull the plug on its controversial television series The Book of Daniel. Reeling will screen two never-aired gay-themed episodes from the series created by openly gay writer Jack Kenny. The Book of Daniel is a darkly comic portrait of a family's personal struggles with issues of faith, forgiveness, and redemption. Rev. Daniel Webster (Aidan Quinn) pops Vicodin several times a day, perhaps for good reason. His son is gay, his sister-in-law is bisexual, his daughter sells pot, and his desperate wife Judith (Susanna Thompson) guzzles martinis trying to keep her family at peace. Seeking solace from the man himself, Daniel has regular conversations with a modern version of Jesus Christ (played by Deadwood’s Garret Dillahunt). Video, 90 min.

REELING: Boy I Am

Boy I Am is a compelling and provocative look at the place of trans issues within the larger queer community. For some within the lesbian community, the act of FtM (female-to-male) transitioning is viewed at best as a naïve social trend or, at worst, an anti-feminist rejection of butchness and female power in favor of male privilege. This riveting documentary focuses on the lives of three transmen as they prepare for their transitions and questions how the emergence of FtM visibility affects the dyke community they have come from. Their stories serve as the backdrop for smart and provocative interviews with leading gender theorists, journalists, activists, lawyers, and professors including Judith “Jack” Halberstam, author of Female Masculinity. Boy I Am is a timely and much needed exploration of this controversial topic by getting to its historical and cultural roots. Video, 72 min.

REELING: Loving Annabelle

Inspired by the 1931 German lesbian classic, Maedchen in Uniform, Brooks gives us a modern day tale of the “forbidden love” between a teacher and her student. Simone is a young poetry teacher who finds peace and security within the walls of a girls’ Catholic boarding school. But trouble arrives in the form of Annabelle, the rebellious and charismatic daughter of a famous senator. Fearing Annabelle will influence the other students, the Headmistress instructs Simone to keep an eye on her. Simone quickly learns that the real challenge is not Annabelle’s rebelliousness, but the attraction budding between them. As Annabelle pursues her teacher, she unleashes the passion that has been locked deep inside Simone, who must decide whether or not to enter into an affair that could cost her everything. Video, 77 min.

REELING: Boy Culture

Boy Culture is the candid confession of “X,” a wildly successful male escort whose cool professional facade is beginning to crack. After ten years of sex-for-pay, during which he has never had sex outside of work, X is suddenly longing for someone who can be more than a paycheck. Good looking, charming, and smart, X could have any man he wants. But he can’t seem to open his heart to the man he secretly loves, his good looking, charming and newly-out roommate Andrew (Darryl Stephens, star of Noah's Ark). Not so secretly in love with X is their other roommate, the young, sexually promiscuous Joey. The love triangle is further complicated when X’s newest client, the mysteriously reclusive older man Gregory (Patrick Bauchau), begins their relationship with an odd condition: he will not have sex with X until the desire is mutual. Meanwhile, he pays X to listen to him recount an unsettling love story spanning fifty years, daring X to try something he hasn’t felt in years: emotion. Directed by Q. Allan Brocka (Eating Out), Boy Culture shows that “sex pays, love costs.” Video, 88 min.

Reeling: Go West

Against the backdrop of the brutal inter-ethnic wars in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 1990s, two gay men fight to stay alive and together. Kenan, a Muslim cellist, and Milan, a Serbian student, attempt to flee war torn Sarajevo to hide in Milan’s home village while they await papers to enter the Netherlands. But the train they board is invaded by military authorities intent on ethnic cleansing. They summarily execute any circumcised male, presumed to be Muslim. In order to save Kenan’s life, Milan disguises him as a woman. Dreaming of peace, happiness, and acceptance, they travel west to start their new lives as man and woman. But Milan is soon drafted into the war, leaving Kenan behind with Milan‘s family to dream of their reunion and escape. 35mm, 97 min.

REELING: Amnesia...

Accomplished director Denis Langlois (L'Escorte, Danny in the Sky) gives us a captivating story inspired by very odd, but true, events. James Brighton, an American tourist in Montreal, is found naked in a vacant parking lot remembering only one thing: the fact that he’s gay. Just who is this young American and what happened to him? No one he meets seems to know...and no one from his past appears to be looking for him. Lies, mystery and deceit abound in this dark, atmospheric world where nothing is as it seems and the very nature of identity is questioned. This twisting, unpredictable thriller will keep you guessing until the final frame. 35mm, 90 min.

REELING: Camp Out

This award-winning, engaging documentary follows ten Midwestern teenagers as they attend the first overnight Bible Camp for gay Christian youths. Caught in the battle between religion, politics, and sexuality, these kids grapple with issues of fitting in and finding their identity amidst confusion and contradiction. Camp Out tackles the question of why, despite the homophobia of many Christian churches, these kids still long to be a part of the Christian faith. As they struggle to reconcile these seemingly irreconcilable but powerful presences in their lives, they provide lessons for us all in tolerance and understanding. Video, 77 min.

REELING: El Presidente!

Welcome to Cabo San Luchas, land of punk rock, Mexican wrestling and corrupt politics. When the town’s wrestling hero, El Homo Loco, decides to run for president, he gets swept up into the glamorous life of a celebrity candidate. His bright pink Mohawk flies in the face of his opponents, who don’t take kindly to his interloping. An endless parade of people either want to bring him down or get him off, including his brother, a closeted skinhead trick, a fiendish fashionista, and some political moles. Will he give in to corporate sponsorship and be corrupted by the heterosexual agenda? Will he win the election? More importantly, will he win the wrestling match? Video, 55 min.

REELING: Fabulous! The Story Of Queer Cinema

Fabulous explores the emergence of gay and lesbian films from the beginning of the gay rights movement in the 1960s to the "New Queer Cinema" of the ‘90s, the proliferation and influence of gay and lesbian films festivals, the discovery by the film business of the gay market, the explosion of gay images in mainstream media, and the current phenomenon of all things gay. A few of the interviewees that shed light on this history include John Waters, Gus Van Sant, Todd Haynes, B. Ruby Rich, and John Cameron Mitchell. Video, 82 min.

REELING: FtF: Female To Femme

Academic but light-hearted, FtF features a host of fabulous femmes, including actress/writer Guinivere Turner, rock stars Bitch (Bitch + Animal) and Leslie Mah (Tribe8), as well as activists, artists, writers, and academics discussing how they came to their own brand of femme identity. FtF celebrates dyke femme identities and an understanding of femininity as multiple rather than singular, constructed rather than natural, and as potentially radical on someone "born female" as masculinity, which has lately been given a great deal of privilege in the dyke community.

REELING: Bob + Jack's 52 Year Adventure

Bob and Jack fell in love while serving in the US Army. Now in their 80s, they recount sometimes funny, sometimes moving stories of how they have managed to stay together for over 50 years, battling the stigmas of being a gay couple living in a small town. This is the story about the kind of lifelong love we all hope for.

|
REELING: Electroshock

Part love story, part harrowing history lesson, this heart-wrenching drama looks at the stark impact of Spanish dictator Franco’s “social danger” laws, which persecuted gays and lesbians well into the 1970s. In 1972, teachers Pilar and Elvira meet and form a close friendship that soon becomes much more. When Pilar’s mother realizes the nature of their relationship, she sends her to an asylum and authorizes electroshock therapy in an attempt to cure her “dangerous perversions.” Enduring years of forced psychological reconditioning and isolation, Pilar never lets her love waver. But by the time the couple reunites, times have changed, and so has Pilar. Though their bond is strong, will the lingering vestiges of her abusive treatments prove too difficult to overcome? Video, 90 min.

REELING: Be Real: Stories From Queer America

Be Real profiles six queer Americans from around the country who embody the complexity of the 21st century. Each profile is a portrait of a genuine hero, an individual living his or her life in an authentic way and having an impact on others - family, friends, neighbors, employees, clients, and strangers - both in their local GLBT communities and society as a whole. One of those profiled is Chicagoan Tara “Red” Tremmel.

REELING: Gender Play

A romper room of gender views, these vivid and daring shorts explore a range of issues and discussions surrounding transgender, intersex, childhood gender identity and gender queerness. But don’t be mistaken, these are not just theoretical exercises; they are portraits of real people who are pushing society’s boundaries through honesty, activism and fun.

|
REELING: If You Think My Shorts Are Funny...

One of the funniest programs we’ve ever put together! This collection of shorts features RuPaul as a stern high school principal, a gay play on Hitchcock’s classic Psycho, two tales of trying to find love in shallow LA, and a few comedic attempts at getting it up.
