Reeling: Liberty

This compelling documentary introduces us to three truly extraordinary women — each living life to the fullest as she deals with the vulgarities of death. But Liberty is about more than just life and death — it’s about friendship, passion, joie de vivre, illness, triumph, womanhood, art, bravery, faith…and more. Pam Walton has packed a lifetime’s worth of lessons into these 55 minutes. Video, 55 min.

Reeling: Sugar

Sugar is a captivating look at the disparity between two different lifestyles, and all the things we’re willing to do for love. A Bruce LaBruce story realistically and compassionately adapted for the screen by Todd Klinck, an ex-hustler who incorporated his own experiences into the screenplay, Sugar is the story of Cliff, a sweet-faced suburban boy, and Butch, the street kid who seduces him on his 18th birthday. Brendan Fehr (Roswell, Final Destination) strikes just the right note between danger and delicacy as Butch, and Andre Noble captures a hopefulness and tenderness well beyond his years in his performance as Cliff. Rounding out the talented cast are Sarah Polley (The Sweet Hereafter, Dawn of the Dead) as a pregnant drug dealer, and Haylee Wanstall (Queer as Folk) as Cliff’s precocious little sister. 35mm, 78 min.

Reeling: Venus of Mars

“Your body gets in the way of seeing your true self,” says Venus, a transgender artist (formerly known as Steve) from Minneapolis, who’s been in a loving and committed relationship for 20 years with her wife, Lynette. They share clothes, lives, and a kind of understanding that can only come from living together for such a long time. This is an absorbing documentary chronicling a relationship that began in the eighth grade, culminated in marriage when both lovers were 23, and continues to thrive to this very day. Venus’s art exists on many levels – drawings, photographs, experimental films, performance art, and music for her band, All the Pretty Horses. Her greatest and most provocative work of art, however, is her own body – truly bi-gendered, since she takes female hormones but has no plans for gender reassignment surgery. Venus of Mars is a brave exploration of one person’s goal to remain true to herself, no matter what the consequences. Video, 105 min.

Reeling: Eating Out

Eating Out is an uproarious romp through the lives of four clueless college students! Sexy Caleb has his eyes on fellow student Gwen, but she only wants what she can’t have – in this case, men who are interested in other men! Caleb’s roommate Kyle convinces him to play gay to win the heart of Gwen’s best friend, Marc – and then seduce Gwen once the job is done. Can it be a coincidence that Kyle secretly has a crush on Marc as well? The plot thickens – and pulses quicken – as everyone scrambles to connect in a web of white lies and mixed messages! Featuring Jim Verraros from American Idol and Ryan Carnes from General Hospital, Eating Out combines the confusion of freshman year, the deception of a fake ID and the sexual tension of a coed dorm to truly replicate the college experience. Video, 90 min.

Reeling: From Boys to Men

From a fast-paced thriller to a romantic adventure on the streets of London; from a village in New Zealand to a heterophobic high school; from Sikhs to hit men, these films offer a delightful variety sure to entertain.

|
Reeling: 15

15 is a youth-gone-wild tale that takes place in the neon streets of Singapore and explores the world of a youth addicted to videos, electronic games, and extreme physical experiences. The five protagonists of the film are real-life street kids, recruited by the director to provide the kind of authenticity that most narrative films never achieve. The result is a homoerotic, sometimes disturbing, but ultimately deeply moving portrayal of disaffected youth reaching out for each other. Director Tan’s visually exciting hyper-modern sensibility elevates the film far above the grittiness of its subjects’ lives, capturing the youth in the artificial glow of an electronic Asian city. 35mm, 93 min.

Reeling: Dorian Blues

Take one hot teen star (Michael McMillian from What I Like About You), one coming-out crisis, one dysfunctional family, and a swing-dancing hooker. Throw them all together in a frothy blend and you get Dorian Blues, the exciting directorial debut from fresh new talent Tennyson Bardwell. Dorian, a confused high school senior, begins his story by announcing his homosexuality to the audience, but how will the people in his life react? If you’re Dorian’s attractive older brother, deny, deny, deny. If you’re his mom, refuse to listen. If you’re his dad, pretend he’s only trying to shock you, and if you’re his handsome therapist, ward off his sexual advances! Dorian refuses to give up easily, setting in motion a shocking chain of events that will change his life forever. Video, 88 min.

Reeling: Saints and Sinners

Edward and Vincent want to be recognized as a married couple by their church – but despite the efforts from their equal-rights organization, Dignity USA, it remains uncertain whether their wishes are going to become reality. That doesn’t stop them from making wedding arrangements, buying tuxes, or selecting bouquets, all the while crossing their fingers and hoping for the best. The scene is set for a showdown in this enlightening examination of an ancient institution. Video, 71 min.

Reeling: Mango Kiss

Mango Kiss is sure to please the die-hard romantic in all of us and give us a few pointers in the art of love, too! Lou and Sassafras are San Francisco-based performance artists and best friends who decide to risk their relationship by becoming lovers. They take their performance art personas into the bedroom and have one of the most creative and charming sex lives ever captured on film! But when the relationship rules they set up for each other start to be violated, their tender hearts are in jeopardy of being broken. Featuring a cast of colorful characters, such as Sass’ aging-hippie mom (Sally Kirkland); Chelsea Chuwawa, the local supermarket dominatrix; and friends Val and Leslie, a couple mired in horrible “lesbian bed death,” the film evokes the hilarity and diversity of an irresistible subculture uniquely San Franciscan. Video, 85 min.
