Chicago, IL — Singing duo Jason and deMarco, a gay couple who last month appeared on the cover of the national gay and lesbian news magazine, The Advocate, will appear in concert on Sunday, September 26 at 7 p.m. at Broadway United Methodist Church.
Singing a brand of music they call "spirit pop," Jason and deMarco [Photos] have a powerful message to share.
When asked what effect they hope their music will have on the GLBT community, and especially on GLBT youth, they responded: "It's not just the music; it's who we are -- we are an out couple who are singing pop music. We want to be an example to gay and lesbian youth that it is possible to be gay, out and have a career; it's possible to be spiritual; it's possible to love yourself and be in a relationship and function within society. People come up to us after our concerts and they're filled with hope; and that's what we hope to share."
Tickets will be sold, at a suggested donation of $10 per ticket, Sundays September 12, 19 and 26 at Broadway United Methodist Church between 12:30 and 1:30 pm, and will also be available before the concert on September 26. A special price for families will be available. Jason and deMarco will also be selling their CDs after their concert in a "meet and greet" fashion.
Last month, The Advocate featured a story that looks at the struggles endured by GLBT people of faith as they learn to reconcile their sexuality with the belief systems of their religious backgrounds. The article features Jason & deMarco and discusses both current and recent historical treatment of gays by organized religion as well as current positions of many mainline churches toward issues such as gays in the clergy and same-sex marriage. There are several references to religious groups which have come into being as gays and lesbians search for a spiritual home that supports and celebrates their lifestyle. Jason & deMarco provide an example of an "out" gay couple who are committed to not only each other and their faith, but to spreading the word of God's unconditional love for ALL people through the music that they write and sing. And the Advocate article is very positive in its treatment of an issue that has kept many "out" gays in a different kind of closet - one that hides their spirituality - for far too long.
Ted Trent from OutoftheCloset.tv commented “I believe Jason and deMarco are the best thing to happen to music since Elton John. They encapsulate integrity, talent, vision, and perseverance. Anyone who can maintain these foundational elements in a career has a fighting chance."
