Chicago, IL — Chicago's DePaul University, the largest Roman Catholic university in the United States, now offers a minor in gay studies.

This past quarter, DePaul's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences unveiled the minor, officially titled Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Studies.

Approved in 2004, the program is made up of classes which were already in the university's curriculum and encompasses a broad range of disciplines including religious studies, history, literature, psychology, philosophy and political science.

Students receive recognition for the minor if they complete a six-course series

The university has received heightened interest at a time when the Vatican seems to be hardening its positions on gay issues.

Newsweek Magazine plans to publish a detailed story next week.

The program has already been featured on National Public Radio, in a news brief in the Washington Post and a story in Chicago's gay press.
