Chicago House to award Tunney with Public Service Award during World Tour Gala

Chicago, IL — Tom Tunney has been chosen to receive the prestigious Partnership in Service Award from Chicago House and Social Service Agency. The award will be presented at the annual black tie benefit, the 2006 World Tour Gala, Saturday, September 30, 2006, at the Fairmont Hotel.

Alderman Tunney was elected to office in 2004 as Chicago's first openly gay alderman and has been working continuously for both he LGBT and Lakeview communities since then. Tunney has fought for legislation that serves the full gamut of his constituents from alleviating congestion in the ward, to limiting property taxes for seniors and long-term residents and improving education for children to retain young families in Lakeview.

A long-time advocate for providing assistance to those individuals and families suffering from HIV/AIDS, Tunney provided professional office space for Chicago House in his own facility on Belmont. He established "Restaurant Nights" at Illinois Masonic Hospital to serve meals to AIDS patients and their families and was the former fund-raising chair for Impact, a gay and lesbian political action organization. To this day, he continues both a personal and professional commitment to Chicago House by providing discounted catering and space for meetings as well as facilitating appointments for Chicago House with city officials. Since becoming Alderman, he has also fought for and secured additional HIV/AIDS funding every year from the city budget.

The Reverend Stan Sloan, CEO of Chicago House praised the alderman:
"Chicago House, like the 44th Ward itself, is a better place because of Alderman Tom Tunney," he said, "It is our honor and pleasure to bestow upon him this year's Public Service Award."

It is awarded to individuals who have lent their help and support
advocating politically for issues affecting those who Chicago House
serves. Previous awards have been presented to Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Senator Steve Rauschenberger, as well as City Treasurer, Judy Rice.
