Chicago, IL — Members of the popular Cheetah Gym chain may not have to find a new workout center after-all. ChicagoPride.com has learned the Cheetah Gym Bucktown and Andersonville locations will reopen this Sunday under new management.
This surprise announcement comes just days after David Wilshire announced he was closing the Cheetah Gym chain due to "employee theft." On Wednesday, Wilshire abruptly closed all Cheetah locations claiming employees skimmed more than $1 million over several years. (Full Story)
Representatives at Cheetah Gym confirm Cheetah Gym is back in business with the Bucktown and Andersonville locations reopening under new management this Sunday, September 9th and plans to open the Edgewater location on Wednesday, September 12.
According to a Cheetah Gym employee, David Wilshire will no longer be operating the popular gyms and employees will be paid.
Management will be available Sunday from 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. at the Andersonville and Bucktown locations to answer member questions.

I am so glad to hear that the gym will reopen. No matter what happened, there is no other facility like it in the Chicagoland area.

That sounds great but I am very skeptical. Why should I trust Cheetah again after it has just hurt me?

I'll give it a chance. I've heard Wilshire will no longer be associated with the gym. I think his limited partners took possesion and are reopening while they try to sell.

David Wilshire has again proven that he has no class. I read his letter on the Cheetah website and am stunned that he can claim to be the victim of the people that he has employed and to show no responsibility for his inability to effectively run a business and serve his members. My guess is that Cheetah is better off without him.

David Wilshire has proven time and again that he is not to be trusted. Unless and until I get some real evidence showing that this is going to be a completely differently run gym from now on, they can kiss my membership goodbye.

Reports are that the bank/backers stepped in. Don't know if the report about Wilshire being taken away in an ambulance the night he did this are true.

I don't understand why everyone feels so personally offended by this situation. Whatever happened here was certainly strange, but not likely directed at any one person in particular. Just ask for a refund from new management for the days that they were not in operation for September. If Cheetah really was taken over by the bank and/or limited partners, then new management should be happy to provide the credit in order to save the franchise. If not, then they will likely do nothing other than create a boom in membership for the Crunch and XSport clubs on North. As for David: Who is this guy? What does everyone really know about him? I'll tell you that I know nothing about him. Nor do I care to know anything about him. Additionally, I'll bet that the overwhelming majority of the members also know close to nothing about him. We should care about this guy only to the extent that he either opens the gym again, or gets the hell out of the way. Bottom line is this; the members simply want one thing - a good, reliable health club that is located close to their homes or work. It matters not if David (or even Scooby Doo) runs the place so long as the club is run at a high level and the members do not have money taken from them.

I'm not sure why this is such a hot topic...it was a crappy, overpriced gym in the first place!

the owner of the sweat shop gym on broadway bought the gyms

The owner of Sweat Shop nothing to do with them reopening. He may be negotiating to buy, but has not done so. There are many legal issues to sort out before the bank can sell them. Here's the Sunday Trib story.
Cheetah Gyms to reopen under bank management
Tribune staff report
September 9, 2007
Days after members arrived at neighborhood Cheetah Gyms to find locked doors and signs indicating that the gym would be closed indefinitely, the three locations in Chicago are reopening under new management.

Say what you will, and plenty has been said, but the Cheetah chain is in itself an amazing accomplishment, and I actually think Mr. Wilshire has a tremendous amount to be proud of. Few people who work steady 9 to 5 jobs can understand the complexities and demands of running a small business, let alone something on the scale of Cheetah Gym. This girl has had more comebacks than Cher, and I don't think she should be counted out quite yet!....

They robbed me and continuied my account without telling me they re-opened. No class at all. I'm extremely upset with them!
