Chicago, IL — On October 11, 1988, Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary founded National Coming Out Day in celebration of the first gay march on Washington D.C. a year earlier. The purpose of the D.C. march and that of National Coming Out Day is to promote government and public awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights and to celebrate homosexuality.
National Coming Out Day has become a time to publicly display gay pride. Share your coming out story below.

My coming out experience came in a few steps. I grew up in a small town outside of Cleveland with a conservative family. I first told one of my friends on Thanksgiving in 1999. He took it very well which I knew he would... that's why I told him first. I then told some more friends in college around March of 2000. It wasn't until later that year that I told my parents, well my mom. She was not happy. I was prepared for anything but hoped for more. I ended up leaving the house hurt by her response. After a month or two, my mom accepted the news - I guess she needed some time to take in the news - and by years end I had come out to my dad. Things aren't perfect and my parents often avoid the subject; however, I'm glad I came out. Now I only wish I had done it sooner. I feel like I lied to people all of these years and I'm just glad today I can be myself!
