"Homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural, and sinful lifestyle," Huckabee

The Associated Press has released a 1992 questionnaire where Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee and former Arkansas Governor advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general public and suggested that Hollywood celebrities fund AIDS research from their own pockets.

The AP story reports the candidate survey was completed by Huckabee during his unsuccessful run from U.S. Senate against incumbent Dale Bumpers.

According to the story, Huckabee wrote the following in response to a question about AIDS policy:

"If the federal government is truly serious about doing something with the AIDS virus, we need to take steps that would isolate the carriers of this plague..."

It is difficult to understand the public policy towards AIDS. It is the first time in the history of civilization in which the carriers of a genuine plague have not been isolated from the general population, and in which this deadly disease for which there is no cure is being treated as a civil rights issue instead of the true health crisis it represents."

In 1992, when the questionnaire was completed, it was long understood that AIDS could not be transmitted through casual contact.

The AP story also noted that Huckabee argued that the federal government should not spend so much on AIDS research.  Rather, Huckabee suggested, Hollywood celebrities who call for AIDS funding should open up their own wallets.

According to the story, Huckabee wrote:

"An alternative would be to request that multimillionaire celebrities, such as Elizabeth Taylor (,) Madonna and others who are pushing for more AIDS funding be encouraged to give out of their own personal treasuries increased amounts for AIDS research."

Also in the same 1992 AP questionnaire, Huckabee reportedly wrote:

"I feel homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural, and sinful lifestyle, and we now know it can pose a dangerous public health risk."

Huckabee, a Southern Baptist preacher, is a favorite among conservative Republicans.
