Washington, D.C. — Republication Mitt Romney has suspended his presidential campaign after a disappointing showing on Super Tuesday, according to various sources.

After spending all of Wednesday with his campaign advisors, the former governor of Massachusetts decided to drop out of the race for the White House.

"I must now stand aside, for our party and our country," Romney said during a speech at today's Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., according to The Associated Press.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a Surrender to terror," he added.

"This is not an easy decision for me. I hate to lose. My family, my friends and our supporters... many of you right here in this room.. have given a great deal to get me where I have a shot at becoming president," Romney said. "If this were only about me, I would go on. But I entered this race because I love America."

Romney, who is believed to have spent more than $40 million of his own money since launching his campaign nearly a year ago, won just seven states on Super Tuesday, mostly small caucus states.

John McCain, who prevailed in most of the Super Tuesday states and thus far has gained 707 delegates (1,191 are needed to win the nomination at this summer's convention), is now the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, with Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul far behind.
