Kids Dress-Up Day Draws Ire of Christian Group

Reedsburg, WI — An elementary school dress-up day in Reedsburg, Wisconsin raised the ire of a conservative Christian radio group last week.

Students at Pineview Elementary in the southern Wisconsin town had been dressing in costume all week as part of Wacky Week.  On Friday students had the option of attending school dressed as senior citizens or members of the opposite gender.  A local resident informed the Milwaukee-based Voice of Christian Youth (VCY) America.  The radio network interrupted programing for a special broadcast that aired on nine radio stations throughout Wisconsin accusing the school of promoting alternative lifestyles.

"It concerns us when a school district strikes at the heart and core of the Biblical values," Jim Schneider, VCY America program director, said in an article in the Reedsburg Times Press. "To promote this to elementary school students is a great error."

After the radio broadcast, the school received phone calls from people across the state complaining about the school event.  However, the response surprised Principal Tammy Hayes who according to the Times Press said she had received no objections to opposite gender dress-up from anyone when a flyer detailing the events of Wacky Week was sent home with children the week before.

"Nobody contacted me," Hayes said.

Hayes said the idea for senior citizen/opposite gender day had actually come from students.

This is completely ridiculous. "It concerns us when a school district strikes at the heart and core of the Biblical values,"
Garbage this isn't striking at anything. It's kids dressing up and christian extremists being as ignorant as always

Gil on Monday, 4/7/2008

These are kids, not adults wearing sheets.
These people have got to get a life.
How about, "Judge not, lest you be judged?"

Clare on Monday, 4/7/2008

Don't these 'Biblical Values' people have real issues in their lives that should concern them? Obviously not.

Those caterwauling most loudly must adhere for the most part to Evangelical sects originating within the last century or so. They have no connection to, or consciousness of, the historic Church and its apostolic teachings.

The school event described here sounds harmless, and to complain about it is silly.

My suggestion to the offended believers is that they make themselves conversant with the writings of Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas, C.S. Lewis, Dieterich von Hildebrant, inter alia.

Nick on Monday, 4/7/2008

These people are just using the bi-bull to justify their homophobia. That book is a license to hate.

Interrupted radio programing?? Seriously?? This is one of the reasons I stay away from organized religion. The hippochristians want to gasp and shake fingers, but I live in the Bible Belt and when I go into a video store, guess who I see renting movies? The Pentacostals, who "don't even own televisions". And they're not renting religious movies. Give us a break with your hippocritical judgements and MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!!

Look your bible is just a book of short stories other than it's historical value it is meaningless. Get an eduscation and stop living in the middle ages. Lets have all the christians and all the islamists fight each other for most insufferable people on earth,,,,and hope they all go to heaven and meet each other there finding they were both completely wrong. That being their hell.

I am a Christian and I do think alot of the stuff they promote in schools these days is wrong. In this case, however, I think this was just harmless fun. I remember when I was a teen-20 some years ago and we had a crazy dress up day like this. The guys would dress up in cheerleading outfits with wigs and makeup. The girls would wear suits and draw on fake beards. No one was promoting homosexuality. In that great time of my life, it was unheard of to promote this way of life. Still, most Christians are not extremists. In this case, take it for what it is, just a fun day.

Doug on Monday, 4/7/2008

I'm with Clare - don't those who complained have anything real to complain about? They just like to hear themselves talk.

Dave on Monday, 4/7/2008

religious extremists needs to stop focusing on acts of others and more on the way they live their lives. Dont push your "religious views" on anyone but yourself and your own children. Our children can do what they want, and if you have a problem with it don't let your child do it.

This reminds me of when Muslim nut-jobs lashed out against the British exchange teacher who allowed kids in her class to name a teddy bear "Mohammed." In both cases you have fanatics perceiving blasphemy against their interpretation of the one true God (because BOTH know best). These are people who suspend all reason and common sense when they make organized, hateful attacks against unsuspecting educators.

This story made DetentionSlip.org. A leading source for crazy news from public schools.

"Core biblical value?!?" Give me a break! Jesus wore a dress most of the time. Where in the bible does it say that this was wrong? What a bunch of doorknobs!

Its VCY America. They inturrupt programming all the time. They even cut off Christian programs in the middle of the show when they disagree with something said.

No suprise here. I'm can't believe this story actually made national news.

Connie on Saturday, 4/19/2008

I believe in Jesus....and I believe in God's rules....but God gave us a free will...I wouldn't allow my boys to dress up as girls...BUT if you do so...it's your choice....
