The evangelical parents of pop singer Katy Perry have condemned their daughter's chart topping song "I Kissed a Girl" and blame the big city of Los Angeles for steering their daughter away from a Christian music career.

"I hate the song," Perry's mother, Mary Hudson, is quoted by the UK's Daily Record. "It clearly promotes homosexuality and its message is shameful and disgusting."

Hudson, who along with her husband Keith is a preacher in Santa Barbara, California, tells the British paper that she and her husband are "deeply ashamed" of their daughter and say that the song "promotes a sin."

The 23-year-old Perry released a Christian album in 2001 under her real name, Katy Hudson.

Perry's dad is a faith-healer and both parents tell the paper they are praying for their daughter's salvation.

"I was worried she'd start doing drugs and drinking alcohol. I still am," Mary Hudson is quoted as saying. I spoke to her only recently. She said, 'I'm not going to turn into Amy Winehouse.'"

"When it [the song] comes on I bow my head and pray."

"I Kissed a Girl" is the second single from Perry's album "One of the Boys."
