Chicago, IL — "It is always heartening to work with organizations, schools and businesses who want to recognize World AIDS Day," said BEHIV executive director Eric Nelson. "HIV and AIDS is still a major issue in our communities and their involvement in educating their members and students is very important."

The Centers for Disease Control recently released new figures on HIV infection, showing that the numbers of infections annually have been underestimated by half, meaning that 60,000 Americans are estimated to be infected each year.

"These new figures paint a grim picture of the lack of information, education and resources in this continuing battle," Nelson continued. "Through BEHIV's work, we are educating and assisting people at highest risk for infection."

BEHIV is partnering with Battaglia Shoes, which will give a portion of all World AIDS Day sales to BEHIV.

"I just want to support a good cause and make a difference and help others," says owner Enzo Battaglia who, along with his mother, started the business 26 years ago, carrying designs of fashion-forward items such as handbags, shoes and leather garments.

The store is located at 70 E. Walton for the past 16 years and is managed by Battaglia's nephew, Sergio Ugartechea.

For more information, contact general manager Brian Moriarty at 312-787-3237.

In addition to its partnership with Battaglia, as part of its World AIDS Day activities, BEHIV will be participating in the following events:

Tuesday, Dec. 2; 1 to 4 p.m.: HIV/STI testing at BEHIV, 1244 W. Thorndale.
Thursday, Dec. 4: 6 to 8 p.m.: Open mic event at Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park.
Monday, Dec. 1, education at Noble/ Golder Charter High School, Chicago; Wells High School, Chicago; Bright Star Church of God in Christ, Chicago; and First Congregation United Church of Christ, Waukegan.
