The national bestseller that shocked the nation--The Death of the West is an unflinching look at the increasing decline in Western culture and power.
The West is dying. Collapsing birth rates in Europe and the U. S., coupled with population explosions in Africa, Asia and Latin America are set to cause cataclysmic shifts in world power, as unchecked immigration swamps and polarizes every Western society and nation. The Death of the West details how a civilization, culture, and moral order are passing away and foresees a new world order that has terrifying implications for our freedom, our faith, and the preeminence of American democracy.
The Death of the West is a timely, provocative study that asks the question that quietly troubles millions: Is the America we grew up in gone forever?
Patrick J. Buchanan's contentious premise in The Death of the West is that the United States is no longer a healthy melting pot, but instead a confused, tottering "conglomeration of peoples with almost nothing in common." Relying on United Nations population statistics, and citing such diverse sources as Yogi Berra and Rhett Butler, Buchanan sees for America four "clear and present dangers": declining birth rates; uncontrolled immigration of peoples of "different colors, creed, and cultures"; a rise of "anti-Western" culture antithetical to established religious, cultural, and moral norms; and a "defection of ruling elites" to the idea of world government. His solutions include higher wages and tax breaks for parents than for singles, a dramatic rollback of immigration quotas, and a National History Bee. Buchanan's volatile, adamant book eschews any middle ground. Readers will either applaud his ideas or be repulsed by them. --H. O'Billovitch

That Pat Buchanan is a brilliant polemicist, is beyond debate. This is the harsh reality regarding the pending fate of the Western culture: Europe, Canada, Australia & New Zealand, and the United States. Within these pages Buchanan dispels a number of "politically-correct" fantasies and fallacies, and attempts, mostly in vain, to get "Westerners" to wake up to the doom that awaits their grandchildren.
Of prime concern is the fate of Europe, where most Americans and Canadians, Austarlians, and New Zealanders trace their ancestral origins. The INDIGENOUS PEOPLE of Europe seem to have lost the will to propagate and survive, both racially and culturally. Some white people, actually REJOICE in this development. They think this is WONDERFUL! The fact is, that this is the result that white-leftists have been dreaming of for approximately half a century. So thoroughly brainwashed with irrational hatred for their own kind, they believe the world will benefit from the self-genocide of all caucasians. This is the REAL racism of our time.
Consider the fact that, of the increasingly smaller number of Europeans who bother to get married, those that actually have children will produce only one or two. Of the ever-growing number of immigrants from the islamic parts of the world, it is not uncommon for them to produce families with 4,5,6, or more children. It does not take a genius to realize what Europe will look like in just twenty years.
-Do you REALLY think that the rights of the INDIGENOUS people of Europe will be respected by a new islamic majority?
The islamic world made several attempts to overrun Europe, in approximately one-thousand years:
-The Iberian Penninsula was conquered in the 700s, and the muslims were not driven out until 1492!
-Charles Martel defeated and repelled a massive islamic invasion in the very heart of what would become France, in 732.
-The Ottoman Turks invaded the Balkans in the 1300s, they were besieging Vienna by the early 1600s.
-However, its now apparent that all the wars and battles which our brave European ancestors fought ...was for nothing.
Yes, pointing out such facts will attract the usual hysterical shrieking about "racism". I bear no ill will whatsoever to any other race or ethnicity. I understand that their ancestral homelands are SACRED to them. That is the place where untold generations of THEIR ancestors lived and died, and that is something worthy of respect.
We are told to believe that the West MAY NOT have such concerns.
-Do you REALLY think any nation in the Middle-east, Africa, Central & South America, or East Asia, ...would allow tens of millions of European people to move en-masse into THEIR homelands?
-Do you REALLY think islamic countries would allow construction of new Christian churches in THEIR cities?
-Do you REALLY think any of the nations in the above list are ready to practice "multiculturalism" and "diversity"?
As a matter of fact, some of those nations/regions of the world ARE "diverse" and "multicultural", ...but there are DOMINANT CULTURES within them that WILL NOT share power and wealth with the minority cultures.
White-liberals desperately want to believe that non-leftist whites are "inherantly racist". Is that so?:
-All these concepts of "multiculturalism" and "diversity" are UNIQUE to the West.
-Approximately fifty years ago, a handful of European nations still maintained colonies throughout much of the world. However, some 99% of all those colonies have long since been GRANTED independance, because the West evolved intellectually to percieve that colonialism was immoral.
-ONLY the Western culture has ever done such a thing. No other nation or culture has willingly given up an empire, without some manner of conflict that was external or internal. Mahatma Ghandi's non-violent campaign demanding independance for India would not have worked with a non-Western culture. The British people percieved that it was the morally correct action to liberate India. Considering the fact that the British had just survived a war against the imperial ambitions of Naziism, they collectively believed that maintaining an empire was no longer an honorable national goal.
In this book, you will also learn about the "progressive" efforts to DISMANTLE all the institutions of Western culture, namely CHRISTIANITY, which was and is the FRAMEWORK upon which Western culture was built.
You will learn about Georg Lukacs, Antonio Gramsci, Herbert Marcuse, and Theodor Adorno, four fanatical early twentieth-century socialists, and their role in fomenting the culture-war against Western ideals.
And you will learn how blatantly racist Latin-American organizations are preaching the annexation of the American south-west.
This is a wake-up call.
The West IS worth saving.

WOW! Where are President O's BIRTH CERTIFICATE and SCHOOL RECORDS? Is HE an illegal alien?? All elected officals MUST have these documents, and be able to produce them, so WHY is HE the exception?? Why is this issue IGNORED in HIS case? If the documentation exists, just PRODUCE IT! and end all speculation! (Note: If YOU claim to be educated, your employer WILL verify it! But we allow the President's credentials to be in doubt!) WHY?

One of the best books to read. It feels like he was bleeding down every word in it. We will stand firm, Pat, for you, our ancestors, and for our children, and for our Western World.

I was introduced to "The Death of the West" in a strange way. I was a student of geopolitics at the University of Melbourne who was curious about and somewhat baffled by the September 11 terrorist attacks. At the time a devotee of radical Trotskyist groups Socialist Worker and Resistance, but the details I found looking at the roots of the September 11 attacks in practical textbooks made me realise it was impossible that there would in the future be enough radical leftists to destroy capitalism.
Although I was and remain suspicious, I will admit that both when I first read it and today "The Death of the West" is by no means an unenlightening read. The people whom Buchanan blames for the problems faced by the West today are not even mentioned, let alone studied, by many other people on the Right. Although the Intercollegiate Studies Institute did list Marcuse at number four on their "Fifty Worst Books of the Twentieth Century", he is not mentioned at all by either Human Events' "Ten Most Harmful Books" or Benjamin Wiker in "10 Books That Screwed Up the World".
Given that my knowledge of culture has grown since first reading "The Death of the West" to show just how much more advanced sexual libertinism and secularism are in Europe, Canada and New Zealand than in the United States, Buchanan's omission of the grossly overestimated Alfred Kinsey seems refreshing. So too is his point on how ideas of sexual libertinism had actually taken over European academia long before the "Sixties". He illustrates this showing how Georg Lukacs did this in Bela Kun's Marxist regime in Hungary, and the even-less-known Dr. Alfred Hoche in Germany during the same era. His mentioning of Wilhelm Reich, whose prototypes of the sexual revolution came out six years before "Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male", adds further to a historical question often treated (even by its supporters) too dogmatically. Buchanan's knowledge of homosexuality in the Weimar Republic also helps him understand present-day cultural differences between Europe and North America quite well.
However, reading other authors on the Right makes Buchanan seem dubious much too often for me to be able to give a really strong recommendation to "The Death of the West". Austrian economists, like Hans-Hermann-Hoppe in Democracy: The God That Failed, have severely questioned his big-government conservative strategies as unworkable, showing that conservatism can only thrive with limited government. My own research also shows that Buchanan's question "Is the death of a religious-based culture inevitable once a society reaches general affluence?", should be answered as "The death of a religious-based culture is inevitable once a society can no longer sustain economic agriculture" (ie. agriculture without subsidies), a point which explains the extreme conservatism of suburban and exurban Australia and Red America in comparison to the rest of the developed world.
From another angle, writers such as Rod Dreher and Robert Inchausti have shown clearly that many Catholics and other devoutly orthodox Christians identified in the 1950s and 1960s with the counterculture that Buchanan deplores in a broad-stroke manner, even if (as with Dorothy Day) they vehemently disagreed with its sexual aims. Although there were always aims of sexual liberation in parts of the counterculture, these were perhaps less central between the 1950s and early 1970s than they became after the "punk" and rap revolutions. Many in the 1960s counterculture were not hostile to the classic literary canon now deplored by most literature professors, as can be seen by the number of literary adaptations in 1960s and early 1970s pop music. Writers like Dreher, Inchausti and Wendell Berry think (with considerable justification) in fact that the type of secession Buchanan says conservatives need is in many ways similar to what the 1950s counterculture wanted.
Also, Buchanan does not realise that fertility declines are becoming extremely general throughout the world, with only the United States itself, Australia and sub-Saharan Africa in any way exempt. Many Muslim countries already have very low fertility and there is no reason to suppose they will level out at a rate higher than Europe today. My point above about how only those nations where agriculture can be carried on without subsidies maintain religious-based societies has a great deal of justification based on recent demographic trends. It is simply uneconomic elsewhere to raise families because of scarcity of flat land and already-dense populations.
Other writers are also quite often more effective than Buchanan at dealing with issues he does cover in "The Death of the West". This is especially true of the problems of feminism, which Buchanan mentions but Carrie Lucas in one of the better Politically Incorrect Guides does a better job. Similarly with demographic issues, Phillip Longman's "The Empty Cradle" is the place to turn. There are also many other books about the roots of what I willingly term "modern European culture", which can be rooted in Hobbes, Nietzsche, Marx and Mill whilst being totally and utterly dissociated from the Christianity Buchanan professes and praises.
All in all, "The Death of the West" has, probably, rather more evidence against it than in favour. If you know the American Right well, you will see that there are many questionable points in this book, and the politically correct will hate it for many more reasons. Moreover, many of these reasons are justified, and today I cannot give the book a recommendation beyond reading it once over.

| Superb expose of Marxist ideologies underpinning western culture. |

With characteristic precision, Mr. Buchanan details the confluence of Marxist ideologies, Hell bent (literally) on permanently destroying any vestige of Judeo-Christian influence in Western European and American culture.
Promoted through the cooperative support of the Mass Media, and featuring such pet causes as the Civil Rights movement, Afro-centrism, the birth control pill, the push for legalized abortion, free love, Women's Liberation, gay rights, and provided with a lap dog, tongue hanging, captive audience of bored, disaffected, post war affluent youth, this subversive coterie virtually created the world we now call "politically correct."
Never mind that their agenda boasted and promoted sins and social maladies long considered anathema by previous generations.
The result we see all around us--the stench of the deconstuctionist, high tech, sexually libertine, post Christian West. No it's not a pretty picture.
Yes, the cultural well has been poisoned, but Mr. Buchanan has at least hung out a warning sign--"Don't Drink From This Well!"
Highly recommended.
