these books are oversized, hardback, with dust jacket - making for lovely gifts. the retro illustrations are beautiful. i bought several in the series and am loving reading them to my boy at night. highly recommended!

As a children's book writer/illustrator, this is one of those books I put on the top shelf in terms of concept, design and writing. It beautifully captures the energy and diversity of New York in a style that's fitting for the city; full of energy, detail, and a colliding collection of rich diversity. As an illustrator, I'm in awe of the effort that went into the artwork. Sure, it's a bit romantic and rose-colored, but for a child, it's still a fine introduction to what makes cities great.

I just purchased 4 of these wonderful books, This is New York, Venice, London and Paris. They are a gift to our sons for Christmas. I think that these will make a great addition to anyone's library, young or old. I will be purchasing these for gifts!!!! The art is enchanting and though some of the facts are not up to date they make corrections and updates in the back.
I can see these books becoming a family heirloom and they will be passed on to my grandchildren one day! Do not deprive your family from these treasures!!

My friend and I recently visited San Francisco. We found the book "This is San Francisco" and when we returned home we used it as a scrapbook/photo album. While traveling around the city we took pictures of us at the places in the book, and then we added them to the book. It is so cute. When we went to New York, a year or so later, we decided to do the same thing. These books are so charmingly illustrated and show the things that make New York New York. Yes, it is a fun book for kids, but also a great travel souvenir for adults.

I recently stumbled across this book in Sydney, Australia. Having never seen any of M. Sasek's books I was drawn to it instantly. The illustrations are beautiful. The text simple and engaging. Husband was just about to leave for a trip to New York so I purchased a copy to read to our 2 1/2 year old while dad was away. She loves this book! We have read it every night while dad has been away. Dad came home this morning with her very own statue of Liberty and Yankee's baseball cap. Dad read her the book again tonight with cap on head and Lady Liberty in hand. Wonderful book for even little ones to enjoy. Thoroughly recommend it. Have just ordered the rest of Sasek's This Is... series. Books to keep for a lifetime.
