I think this is an excellent book. It helped me years ago and I've used the same techniques to help other people, adults who claim they can not draw, pick up some charcoal and prove themselves wrong. And once they discover that it's all about a new way of seeing (and not about hand-eye coordination, etc.) they very naturally have to ask themselves "What else am I not seeing in the world around me? What other barriers are blocking me from my raw perceptions of nature and the world?"

This is a great natural therapy. Art and drawing does the same thing that neurofeedback does, that is, teaches you to focus and gain self-control. This might be considered to be a psychological disorder self-help book in addition to an art book. Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Parent and Educator's Guidebook

My high school art teacher took us through this book, our art skills improved dramatically-even the students whose skills were not very good. I showed my kids the art I saved in my portfolio, I was a pretty decent artist before going through the book, but they were impressed by the improvement. It takes time to develop the skills, but not too long. I have read other reviews on this book, all of them very positive. My kids want to develope their skills as well, and my first choice of books was this one. They have already begun the book and are starting their own portfolios. I highly recommend the book, and that you and your kids use it and create your own portfolios!

This is the most important book on drawing. Through these exercises anyone can learn to draw. A must for teachers. "Blind contour drawing" was taught in my high school art class back in the 50s, and that's the most influential way I learned to draw. Neither I nor my teacher knew why it worked then. Betty Edwards explains it. There are many more exercises as well.Inspiring.
