  • A tribe is any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader, and an idea. For millions of years, humans have been seeking out tribes, be they religious, ethnic, economic, political, or even musical (think of the Deadheads). It’s our nature.

Now the Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. All those blogs and social networking sites are helping existing tribes get bigger. But more important, they’re enabling countless new tribes to be born—groups of ten or ten thousand or ten million who care about their iPhones, or a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming.

And so the key question: Who is going to lead us?

The Web can do amazing things, but it can’t provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals— people just like you who have passion about something. The explosion in tribes means that anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at her fingertips.

If you think leadership is for other people, think again—leaders come in surprising packages. Consider Joel Spolsky and his international tribe of scary-smart software engineers. Or Gary Vaynerhuck, a wine expert with a devoted following of enthusiasts. Chris Sharma leads a tribe of rock climbers up impossible cliff faces, while Mich Mathews, a VP at Microsoft, runs her internal tribe of marketers from her cube in Seattle. All they have in common is the desire to change things, the ability to connect a tribe, and the willingness to lead.

If you ignore this opportunity, you risk turning into a “sheepwalker”—someone who fights to protect the status quo at all costs, never asking if obedience is doing you (or your organization) any good. Sheepwalkers don’t do very well these days.

Tribes will make you think (really think) about the opportunities in leading your fellow employees, customers, investors, believers, hobbyists, or readers. . . . It’s not easy, but it’s easier than you think.

    Customer Reviews:

Creates a new perspective for Social Media enthusiasts
Customer Rating: 3 out of 5
    This book does three things.

    1) It talks about Leadership
    2) It talks about Tribes
    3) It gives a new perspective to social media enthusiasts about looking into their Groups / Communities as Tribes.

May be the classification that I have given above might not be satisfying but for me it helped to understand the book this way. Basically I as a leader should think about the tribe, should guide my tribe or lead my tribe that is just one angle.

As a human being or someone in quest should understand what a tribe really is and how it helps a movement or a particular idea. This is another angle.

But what I benefited most from was the idea of looking into the group I handle as a Tribe. I am also working as a social media marketeer and this new perspective makes me feel like a Jungle King :-). But it is immensely helpful. This new perspective has guided me straight and have given me ideas as to what should I be doing next in order to get most from my Tribe and how to help them.

Most of the reviewers are right when they say that this book without Table of Content lacks substance but is a good read if you are looking to understand the social media in detail but not for leadership. Also, its just 125 pages wont take a day to finish it.

    Good one but....
Customer Rating: 3 out of 5
My initial reaction after the reading the book is 'Its good but...'. While Seth makes a brilliant attempt to help realize sheepwalking and its effects, it falls short of explaining how to lead a tribe using compelling case studies. But I like the book for the thought and the narration style taken up by Seth. Also a specific mention micro leadership within a tribe is very apt.

Wish Seth can have a Twitter conference( Just like what Scott Beale did) to discuss more about this topic

    Analogies That Stick
Customer Rating: 4 out of 5
Tribes was the first Seth Godin book I had read - but I have seen references to his work throughout the marketing and blogging communities. Tribes does many things well to include the small size (which makes it stand out), interesting discussion points - especially those on leadership, and the conversational tone of the book which makes for a quick and easy read. In addition - one of the major strengths of Seth Godin's work is his knack for developing strong analogies which seem to stick - for example "heretics" and "the balloon factory and the unicorn" come to mind.

There were a few things that Tribes could have done better - such as providing illustrations throughout the book - the insides were strangely plain for a marketing book. Also, the provided examples meant to reinforce the major talking points did not necessarily invoke excitement - there were a couple great examples, however many were just lackluster in nature. Finally, the organization of this book could you use a bit of work - a table of contents and index would be nice for later reference.

Overall Tribes was a good read and I recommend it to those interested in leadership and marketing.

    Do You Have a Tribe?
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
This little book if filled with BIG IDEAS that are down-to-earth and fundamentally true. Every page for me was an AHA... I think I already knew that, but not in such clear terms and words. Seth Godin has a way of spelling things out that is concise and to the point. Entertaining and insightful and a MUST READ for anyone with a vision of how our lives can be better and HAS THE COURAGE to do what it takes to create a movement and lead a tribe for positive change. It takes one essential decision - a conscious choice to overcome FEAR. If you can get beyond that, then you can build your success as you build a tribe. It's not about money and fame, but about doing something that really matters. It's about recognizing the world has changed and demanding that we change as quickly as we can to keep up. The negative perspectives, the fear and division, the judgment and criticism, are entrenched in our lives. You can either allow it to keep you down and hold you back, or you can see it for what it is and get beyond it. BELIEF in spite of nay-sayers and critics takes courage, and that's the essence of leadership. It's why there are tribes out there looking for leaders right now. Are you ready to step up to the plate and find out what you're really made of? READ THIS NOW!
