Ari Gold

"...Infinite possibility, if I can only break down this fourth wall/I’m living in a room for everyone, finding my space under the sun..."and so goes the title track of Ari Gold’s sophomore release, Space Under Sun (Released Nov 2003, independently over the internet on Gold 18 Records). In a market saturated with manufactured stars who for the most part are perfectly content churning out the same old cliché's, Gold is determined to shake pop up and find a space for his music in a postmodern world. "I wanted to make an album that I didn’t have when I was growing up," Ari told Larry Flick of Billboard magazine in 2001 regarding his first album as an openly gay pop singer which would later take home the Outmusic Award for Outstanding Debut Recording. With Space Under Sun Gold goes even further musically & lyrically and creates a pop landscape that goes beyond boundaries and labels.

After landing on Top Of The Pops with DJ Luck and MC Neat on the UK single, "I’m All About You" (Island Universal) co-written and produced by hitmaker Desmond Child, Gold began working on Space Under Sun. He collaborated with top notch industry songwriters and producers such as Peter Amato (Leanne Rimes), Marsha Malamet (Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan), MAJOR (Lamya), Mr. Khalil (Res), Steve Skinner (Rent, Bette Midler), Soong Lee (Allure) recording all over the globe from Atlanta, Miami, LA and NYC to London and Israel. Gold describes the album as "an intergalactic hybrid of 80’s and contemporary R&B, spacey pop, and funky smooth soul." Gay City News stated that "Gold pushes the envelope as much as a rapper like Eminem does." Although instead of lyrics that are fag bashing and woman hating, the subject matter ranges from a guy and a girl (Kendra Ross, currently featured on the latest CD by Talib Kweli) fighting over the same man ("He’s On My Team") to getting caught having sex in public with another man by the cops ("Caught), to diva worship ("Fan-tastic"), a matter that is crucial to many a gay man’s evolution, seeking independence and self actualization ("More Than Enough," "Back To me") to romantic and sexual intimacy ("Funk That Ship," "Intimate.") There is also the tender ballad "Bashert (Meant To Be) in which Gold incorporates his Jewish identity of having grown up as an orthodox Jew. The 13 track CD includes a downloadable music video of "Wave Of You" directed by Guy Guido which was shot as a tribute to the late great photographer Herb Ritts as well as an mp3 of "Review My Kisses" a song co-written and produced by Desmond Child. Gold will continue performing in NYC where Time Out magazine said that he was a "smash success...wowing the local music scene" and Backstage called his musicianship, "flawless" as well as around the globe to promote his new CD.

Hot Music!
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
Ari Gold's music is totally hot. Can't wait to buy his next CD and, better yet, see him in person! Can't go wrong with a voice like that!

fine breakout album for Ari Gold
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
Ari Gold is a fine example of a modern day R&B/rap/hip hop crooner (yes, crooner) who can always take a song and turn it into a work of art. Although I don't usually buy this type of CD I was very pleasantly surprised with Ari's fine work on this album.

The track set begins with "Space Under Sun," the title song of this CD. After some special sound effects the mellow arrangement begins; and when Ari Gold comes in this number takes off like a jet! The R&B arrangement makes great use of the percussion; and Ari's voice sounds great. The backup chorus bolsters the number even more to make "Space Under Sun" a strong start for this album.

"Funk That Ship" begins with a distinct rap/hip hop flavor that makes great use of the percussion and electric guitars; Ari sings this well and the number gets even better when more mellow sounds are added to the arrangement--good backup chorus, too. Moreover, "More Than Enough" begins with some great backup vocals and "More Than Enough" sports a rapping sound that I really like. "Intimate" has some great piano and Ari croons this to perfection! "Intimate" lets Ari express his romantic affections for his man. "Caught" has another great beat with some fine electric guitar; Ari explores a situation in which his love for another man actually gets him in trouble with the police. Good number.

"Bashert (Meant To Be)" has an elegant guitar arrangement; and Ari performs a great cover of "Do You Really Want 2 Hurt Me." Love those special sound effects that go along with that classic R&B/hip hop flavor!

"Re:Union" has great sound effects to make it sound like there's more than one Ari singing at times during this number; and the arrangement works wonders to bolster "Re:Union." "Re:Union" lets Ari sing of meeting his former lover seven years after they broke up; and Ari delivers this to perfection!

The CD ends with a bonus track entitled "Wave Of You." The quicker tempo along with that Latin disco flavor makes a strong musical arrangement; and Ari sings this like the pro that he is! "Wave Of You" gives us a strong ending for this CD.

The CD boasts some multimedia features when you play it on your computer's CD-ROM drive; we get the lyrics and so much more!

Ari Gold gives blood on this terrific album; and it shows. He has great courage to open up on this album and express his thoughts about and affections for another man. I highly recommend this CD for people who can keep an open mind as they listen to some great R&B/rap/hip hop style music.

Thanks, Ari!

One Of The Worst...
Customer Rating: 1 out of 5
This is truely one of the worst Cd's I have ever listened too. Sure it's great that he is gay and actually singing about being gay rahter than closeting himself, but that does not make for a great CD. The songs are generic and bland with no beat whatsoever, his voice is weak and emotionless, and the lyrics are chessy silliness. The hooks themselves don't even exsist. Once I got to the train wreck that was He's On My Team, (a lame version of The Boy Is Mine by Brandy and Monica), I knew there was no hope. Stay away from this CD at all costs. Not even one song was ok to listen too. I hope he gets better material next time because I do want to be a fan of his, but this is trash.
