America is coming apart at the seams.  Forces foreign and domestic seek an end to U.S. sovereignty and independence.  Before us looms the prospect of an America breaking up along the lines of race, ethnicity, class and culture.  In Day of Reckoning, Pat Buchanan reveals the true existential crisis of the nation and shows how President Bush’s post-9/11 conversion to an ideology of “democratism” led us to the precipice of strategic disaster abroad and savage division at home.

Ideology, writes Buchanan, is a Golden Calf, a false god, a secular religion that seeks vainly, like Marxism, to create a paradise on earth.

While free enterprise is good, the worship of a “free trade” that is destroying the dollar, de-industrializing America, and ending our economic independence, is cult madness.  While America must stand for freedom and self-determination, the use of U.S. troops to police the planet or serve as advance guard of some “world democratic revolution” is, as Iraq shows, imperial folly that will bring ruin to the republic. While America should speak out for human rights, the idea that we get in Russia’s face and hand out moral report cards to every nation on earth is moral arrogance.  While we have benefited from immigration and the melting pot worked with millions of Europeans, the idea we can import endless millions of aliens, legal and illegal, from every culture, clime, creed, and continent on earth, and still remain a country, is absurd.

To save America the first imperative is to remove from power the ideologues of both parties who have nearly killed our country.

In his final chapter, Buchanan lays out ideas to prevent the end of America.  He calls for a bottom-up review of all of America’s Cold War commitments, a ten-point program to secure America’s borders, ideas to halt the erosion of our national sovereignty and restore our manufacturing preeminence and economic independence, and a formula for finding the way to a cold peace in the culture wars.

Buchanan offers a radical but necessary program, for neither party is addressing the real crisis of America -- whether we survive as one nation and people, or disintegrate into what Theodore Roosevelt called a “tangle of squabbling nationalities” and not a nation at all.

IN THIS EYE-OPENING BOOK, PAT BUCHANAN REVEALS THE PERILOUS PATH OUR NATION HAS TAKEN:

- Pax Americana -- the era of U.S. global dominance -- is over.

- A struggle for world hegemony among the United States, China, a resurgent Russia and radical Islam has begun.

- Torn apart by a culture war, America has begun to Balkanize and break down along class, cultural, ethnic, and racial lines.

- Free trade is hollowing out U.S. industry, destroying the dollar, and plunging the country into permanent dependency and unpayable debt.

- One of every six U.S. manufacturing jobs vanished under Bush.

- The Third World invasion through Mexico is a graver threat to U.S. survival than anything happening in Afghanistan or Iraq.

…IS OUR DAY OF RECKONING JUST AHEAD?

A very popular title! Buchanan's is the best of the lot.

As an old hippie, I will always remember Pat's association with Nixon, and, as he reminds us more than once in this book, he was a big supporter of Reagan, who was also no friend to the liberal agenda. But as Churchill is supposed to have said (but didn't), "If you're not liberal when you're young, you have no heart. If you're not conservative when you're older, you have no brain." It has the ring of truth regardless. Therefore I can now say with no embarrassment that I really do like Patrick Buchanan; that in truth, he is not far from my way of seeing 'what is' today.

Oh I disagree with him on abortion, but then I disagree with Ron Paul on the same subject, and Ron Paul can just about do no wrong in my book. And, to be fair, both of these gentleman say that the issue should be decided on the level of the States not at the level of the Federal Government. Which is a prescription for Liberty pretty much across the board.

Now, this particular book of Pat's is, in my opinion, his best. He really "puts it all together" here, from alpha to omega. In startling clarity he weighes in on all of the huge problems facing our country. Most I had already recognized myself and in that sense, he was "preaching to the choir" with me. But I had never really focused on the issue of free trade with as much emphasis as it warrants. And here Pat does a masterful job of educating us.

What this "Day of Reckoning" amounts to is "a perfect storm" in which the United States of America is facing its end. As Pat goes down his laundry list of issues in which our country has consistently done the wrong thing, I for one began to wonder how America could have chosen the wrong courses of action 100% of the time! It is as if someone had intentionally set out to destroy the United States, so that every decision and act was always referred back to that over-riding goal. In that way, every move we made was indeed the wrong one from the standpoint of doing what was right for America.

Patrick never quite goes the whole way with this line of reasoning however, so that he never quite reaches the conclusions of a Ron Paul or an Ed Griffin. I wonder if this is intentional because once you go all the way in that direction you have a cabal on your hands, and that will lose you credibility in many minds (unfairly I might add). And yet this is in fact what has happened. What has happened to America and the reason why every major decision has been completely and massively wrong for our welfare is because all this has been part of a well-thought out plan. And this is not conspiracy theory by the way. It is conspiracy fact.

I would like very much to ask Patrick what he thinks about the way in which the Federal Reserve system and the Personal Income Tax were pushed through Congress. Pat spends a great number of words on Woodrow Wilson and yet he never mentions Col. House. He lambasts Goldman Sachs but never explains why these banksters take care of their own. But that is really small potatoes in the overall importance of Buchanan's message. We Americans can rid ourselves of these oligarchic traitors without knowing about the Rothschilds, Morgans and Cecil Rhodes' Round Table.

As I said Buchanan is not far from the Kingdom in my book. And, for a comparatively mainstream figure like he is, to be saying what he is saying is very important for all of us who have been trying to explain things to our families and neighbors.

Everyone should read pp.192-199.Yes! Industrial- Manufacturing is the core of any prosperous economy

Buchanan does a great job in this book exposing the complete and utter intellectual bankruptcy of American trade policy since 1976.Jimmy Carter, acting as a representative of the giant Wall Street investment banks and their libertarian hedge fund-private equity firm, supply side allies ,started America down the road to the hollowing out, downsizing, and outsourcing of America'a industrial manufacturing sector.Every President since Carter has gone along with this Wall Street banker game plan.

The most important pages in the book are pp.192-199.Every American, Republican and Democrat ,should read these pages before voting in the 2010 elections. The problem is that both parties are controlled by Wall Street by means of private donations ,campaign contributions, political fund raising, and lobbyists who provide all expense paid vacations and free sex to Senators and Representatives in exchange for creating swiss cheese like loopholes in so called reform legislation.Buchanan's call for an American industrial policy a la George Washington and Alexander Hamilton is the only way out.The current Bush-Obama bailout policies, aimed at creating another bubble to distract Americans from the reality of their continued economic decline ,comes right out of the Wall Street (and Wall Street Journal) orchestrated libertarian-Austrian-supply side game plan .

I have one criticism of the book.Buchanan does get his J M Keynes right.Buchanan rightly points out that Keynes realized that retaliatory and revenue tariffs were sound policies,as opposed to protectionist tariffs. He correctly points out and rejects the nonsense in Milton Friedman's bizarre libertarian,Utopian claims about free trade.Unfortunately,Buchanan misses the opportunity to cite Adam Smith's identical rejection of Milton Friedman's ideological,Utopian dreams from pp.434-439 of Smith's 1776 Wealth of Nations [Modern Library(Cannan edition) with the forward by Max Lerner].Smith's analysis on these pages,in favor of retaliatory and revenue tariffs,as well as a very go slow approach to opening up local markets in order to avoid destroying the concentrated fixed capital invested in the industrial-manufacturing sector, is the best that has ever been presented .It is not surprising that Washington and Hamilton had well read copies of the WN in their libraries because their economic policies came right out of Adam Smith's play book for economic growth.

His finest work...

In interest of brevity, this book is a must read for anyone who feels that something is terribly wrong with our nation.

In this book, Mr. Buchanan disavows party allegiance. In it's place, he proposes a centrist view of America first, and perhaps more importantly Americans first. This is an excellent examination of how bad policy, unnecessary wars, reckless free trade and the greed of corporate America have set the U.S. on a course for destruction.

Very good diagnosis
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
This book of Patrick Buchanan is a very good diagnosis of USA and the World around. I am not an American but After my last visit in USA I have to agree with the main theses presented by Mr. Buchanan in his short book concerning wide subject.

Our world (I mean all globe) is in a very big danger of new age of chaos, similar to this one, which existed at the end of the European antiquity. There are no candidates for the great superpower in the time, when USA will be destroyed by its internal enemies (immigrants who do not assimilate, extremely rich people who work against the national state, Marxism-like ideology of globalisation ect).

Mr. Buchanan is a man from the western country and he does not understand Russia. That's why he thinks that russia can be regarded as a civilized country, which respects right and international agreements. With Russia it is never like that. Modern Russia is nothing more than ''mini USSR'', because it is only weaker than its strong predecessor. This country is still really aggressive (for instance Georgia 2008). Russia still wants to recover its position as a world superpower. It will not respect other nations and states. Russia wants to colonize its neighbors and live on their costs as it was under the soviet regime. I would propose a strong policy against Russian political ambitions for the American governments. No dreams of peaceful Russia, which respects other countries.

Get your head out of the sand and read this book!

For anyone reading this post, YOU are the last hope of this Nation. Outlined in this hard hitting book, is the tragic story of greatness at the twilight of it's life. The story is about the United States of America. Once possessing not only power, but commanding the respect and envy of the world, America is falling down.

Pat Buchanan writes about the most serious threats to our survival and it's not Al-Qaeda. Unchecked illegal immigration, a growing trade deficit, irresponsible fiscal policy, and unfunded liabilities, such as Medicare and Social Security threaten to collapse our nation from within.

Pat talks about our governments myopic foreign policies that have overstretched our commitments and ensured that we will be embroiled in an unending cycle of wars without end until we are bankrupted. He speaks candidly about the growing Balkanization of our country and what that means for our future.

As always, Pat shows us the ease with which our future decline can be avoided and how we return to greatness. Read this book and then decide to make a difference today by taking action. It's one thing to know what needs to be done, it's quite another to do it! To ignore our problems is to hope that the alligator will eat you last, but trust me, it's still going to eat you!
